Consilul Uniunii Europene a prelungit pentru înca un an - până la 27 februarie 2010 restricţiile de circulaţie pe teritoriul său pentru liderii din Transnistria, fiind vizate 19 persoane, între care şi liderul de la Tiraspol, Igor Smirnov, precum şi cei doi fii ai acestuia. Decizia a fost adoptată la 10 februarie 2009.
Interdicţia de călătorie şi tranzit a fost impusă liderilor de la Tiraspol la şfârşitul lunii februarie 2003 şi a fost înnoită anual.
Uniunea Europeana a luat această măsura, considerând drept inacceptabile poziţiile liderilor transnistreni şi refuzul lor de a susţine eforturile comunităţii internaţionale pentru găsirea unei soluţii a conflictului din Transnistria.
În august 2004, interdicţiile au fost extinse şi la o serie de funcţionari ai regimului separatist, acuzaţi de intimidare şi închidere forţata a şcolilor cu grafie latină de pe teritoriul transnistrean.
