The first system basically did the same as the latter, it may have been a bit of a hack, but it worked, fast, with little resources, and didn't time out or limit the number of sessions.What am I trying to say. KISS. Avoid complex web technologies. The right' way of doing a site might not be best, I some who used a PHP framework for their site, which was making well over a hundred file calls per page.
